Media and Design: Visualization, Modeling & Simulation Systems

Participants   In the past 20 years the media and design industries have seen the rapid elimination of analog technology in favor of digital applications systems that create, edit, distribute and present audio and video news, entertainment and advertising. With each iteration of Moore’s Law, the increased processing speeds and the reduced footprint of digital media devices have ushered into common usage totally new and exciting ways of providing content to eager audiences around the world. Additionally, the same technology, combined with computational sciences, is allowing high fidelity modeling and simulation of physical, chemical and economic processes. Consequently, everything that can be modeled can be delivered “on demand” with more functionality and at lower costs than ever thought possible. The move to low cost, ubiquitous digital modeling and entertainment has eroded the influence of the traditional entertainment centers like New York and Los Angeles and technical centers like San Jose and Raleigh-Durham and empowered small, specialized producers to flourish in unexpected places. The dawn of digital media has stimulated the growth of thousands of small, creative organizations with specific domain (application) knowledge in the Midwest region. They now provide content, devices and network-accessible services for new media customers in such diverse fields as sports, education, science, arts, gaming, advertising and politics.

Organization   The Institute is in contact with many of the manufacturing, service and governmental organizations in the region about collaborative research services, cyber-infrastructure and computational resources that are believed to be beneficial, and in some cases necessary, for development of future transportation products and traffic management systems. It is the expectation of the participants that leaders will be selected, work teams organized and collaborative research projects identified that will be served by the cyber infrastructure being developed by the Institute. If you or your organization is interested in being a participant in the transportation systems cluster please follow the link to Contacts.

Projects   To be announced.

Role of the Institute   The Institute will support the work of the participants in the advanced manufacturing cluster by providing web-based collaboration services to assist project participants with communications, project management, financial and resource management. The Institute will also provide some or all of the computational resources necessary to model, analyze and simulate machine-to-machine and machine-to-business interfaces, structural design elements, and process flow within manufacturing plants, and to configure advanced manufacturing management systems that couple, in real time, vertical plant and business level processes and horizontal supply-chains in order to improve the agility, quality and performance of commercial enterprises.
